Roadside Unit (RSU) and On-Board Unit (OBU)

What is T2X?

T2X, “Transponder-to-Everything,” transforms the traditional tolling transponder and reader into a next-generation on-board unit (OBU) and roadside unit (RSU) that provides connectivity across multiple communication interfaces.

  • Supports V2X systems and devices using the SAE J3217 protocol
  • Compatible with existing UHF RFID protocols for current tolling systems
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS enabled for cellular networks and mobile devices
  • OBU interfaces directly with the vehicle via CAN bus to extract vehicle data
  • RSU provides communication channels with the OBU, existing roadside systems, and back-office systems
  • OBU and RSU integrate seamlessly into existing tolling and road safety networks and other software platforms
  • Embedded, flexible, and efficient Linux OS

 Product Description

STAR Systems’ Discovery-T2X (transponder-to-everything) platform bridges today’s proven transponder-based infrastructure with tomorrow’s emerging V2X (vehicle-to-everything) ecosystem, enabling tolling agencies to modernize existing operations while preparing for full V2X integration.

The Discovery-T2X platform consists of a multi-communication On-Board Unit (OBU) and Roadside Unit (RSU) engineered to operate seamlessly across both current and next-generation environments.

The OBU supports existing UHF connectivity for full compatibility with current tolling systems, while also enabling V2X communications based on the SAE J3217 protocol. Integrated Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth interfaces provide connectivity to mobile devices and backend systems, while a CAN bus interface enables access to real-time vehicle data.

Electronic Toll Collection

With its vehicle-agnostic design, Discovery-T2X eliminates dependency on automotive OEM implementations, allowing agencies to deploy and scale independently using familiar toll tag distribution models. The platform supports a wide range of applications including traditional tolling, distance-based road-usage charging (RUC), geofencing, vehicle occupancy detection, and data-driven traffic operations.

Built to support phased deployment strategies, Discovery-T2X allows agencies to maintain existing infrastructure while incrementally introducing V2X capabilities. This approach reduces risk, controls capital investment, and enables predictable rollout timelines without requiring immediate large-scale infrastructure replacement. By combining immediate functionality with long-term compatibility, Discovery-T2X provides a practical and cost-effective pathway toward the connected transportation systems of the future.

Fleet Management

For fleet operators, Discovery-T2X provides real-time visibility, operational control, and data-driven optimization across vehicle networks. By combining direct vehicle data access via the CAN bus with multi-channel connectivity (V2X, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS), fleets can monitor vehicle location, status, and performance without relying on OEM-specific telematics systems.

The platform enables more accurate route planning, geofencing, and distance-based usage tracking, helping reduce fuel consumption, improve driver safety, and support regulatory compliance. Additionally, seamless communication between OBUs, RSUs, and other software platforms allows fleets to automate tolling, streamline reporting, and integrate with existing fleet management software. With its vehicle-agnostic design and support for both current and emerging communication standards, Discovery-T2X offers a scalable, future-ready solution for fleets seeking to enhance safety, reduce costs, and improve overall operational efficiency.
